DEDICATED WORKS

Sharon Bezaly has always had a great interest in contemporary music and is presumably the living flautist with the greatest amount of concertos inspired by and dedicated to her in the world. At the time of writing this there are a great number of concertos and a lot of chamber and solo music from more than two dozen composers, among which Kalevi Aho, Sofia Gubaidulina, Christian Lindberg, Brett Dean, Sally Beamish and Haukur Tómasson stand out, as do the efforts of no less than four Sinoamerican composers and a Chinese one.  All of these concertos are recorded and freely available at her house label, BIS Records.  Also Jeff Beal – the composer of several famous works and an EMMY-winner for his music to the famous TV drama series *House of Cards* – will be ready with his Concerto during the first half of 2016.  Thus 16 composers from 11 countries in five continents have written 20 concertos for her, on top of which we can add a lot of composers with chamber and solo works, all dedicated to her.  And more to come…

WHAT’S UP?

I am immensely thrilled to start an exciting collaboration with Jenny Rose at A.O.R management Inc. in Seattle as my general manager!
Jenny has been working hard these last couple of months, setting everything up and we are now ready to launch!
Please find her contact details under ‘CONTACT

I am waiting with anticipation for the official release date of the House of Cards SACD at the end of August. This Double SACD is one of BIS’s biggest projects ever!

Collaborating with composer and conductor Jeff Beal has enriched me both as a musician and as a person. Both Jeff and his wife, soprano Joan Beal, were there with me when we gave the US premiere of his Flute Concerto last May, together with the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä.

Jeff’s and Joan’s presence on and off stage made the experience even more special. It has been a privilege collaborating with this epic orchestra and with Osmo, who has really made the piece his own and has impacted my interpretation of it.

We were all over the moon by the public’s warm reaction to this new piece, with standing ovations at all three concerts, screaming and cat-calling – what magical moments! I was truly touched by the warm reception of the piece by the orchestra members as well. Spending time with my flute colleagues in their wonderful Minneapolis was an added bonus!

Now its time to bring the concerto over to Europe! I will be doing that first on a tour with the Argovia Philharmonic (Switzerland).

Trombonist, conductor, composer Christian Lindberg was one of the first composers that has written for me. That was back in 2002. We have recorded his concerto with the Swedish Chamber orchestra and toured together in Sweden. I was playing Christian’s concerto in Europe, among others in the Musikverein in Vienna with the Tonkünstler Orchestra and Stefan Sólyom.

This season, Christian and I will join forces again, this time in his capacity as a conductor, alongside his NK orchestra (Israel) in a project of Israeli works for flute and orchestra. Composer Ella Sheriff is writing a newly commissioned piece for me. We met while I was in Israel about a year ago and really ’clicked’. I am so excited, knowing that she is in the process of composing as I write! Per England, Swedish and enormously multi-talented, is transcribing well-known Israeli folksongs for flute and orchestra.

There is also a new commission being written for me by Sebastian Fagerlund (Composer in Residence of the Consertgebouw, Amsterdam), to be premiered with the Tapiola Sinfonietta (Finland) and recorded by BIS.

But for the next weeks, it is all about family and sunshine! Happy summer!

RECORDINGS

Sharon’s collaboration with her record label, BIS, has produced dozens of exciting recordings with repertoire ranging from the flute’s core repertoire, like Mozart, Ibert and Nielsen, to the breaking of new ground with repertoire like concertos by Sofia Gubaidulina, Kalevi Aho, Christian Lindberg, José Serebrier, Brett Dean and Sally Beamish, to name a few of the composers that have dedicated their works to her.

Teaming up with orchestras like the Stockholm Phil, Gothenburg SO, Residentie Orch in Haag, Lahti SO, São Paulo SO, Singapore SO, Tapiola Sinfonietta and several others, she has made music with conductors like Osmo Vänskä, Neeme Järvi, Alan Gilbert, Lan Shui, Martyn Brabbins, and John Neschling. She has also been very active in chamber music, collaborating with musicians like Gidon Kremer, Roland Brautigam, Nobuko Imai.

Her work with producers like Rob Suff and the five producers in Take5 has resulted in accolades such as Diapason d’Or, Choc de la Musique, Gramophone’s Editor’s choice, BBC Music Magazine’s Choice of the Month and Fono Forum’s Stern des Monats as well as the ECHO Prize and the Cannes Classical Award.
